“I’m no Christer” the man said. “I believe in love and long underwear and that’s about all I believe in.” My friend said the old man was crazy and I should ignore him. We walked on through stalls and crowds gathered at those stalls to buy Smoked Brisket sandwiches, Chicken Fried Bacon and Chocolate Covered Chunky Bacon Maple Nougat On-a-stick. A tall beautiful woman held out Funnel Cake and winked, but we refused and walked on toward the livestock pavilion where pigs and horses and cows and sheep were being judged and awarded rosettes and trophies tall as a shotgun. Snorting, squalling, rustling, lowing...living noises. In a fenced area just outside the compounds: One buffalo, a huge brown mountain, alone. His eyes rolled toward the crowds. The sign on his stall read

A girl in Daisy Dukes held out a handful of hay. The beast snorted, raised his mouth to take the hay, but she dropped it, screamed, ran off. The animal barely moved. He looked down at the hay and back up at the people watching. “Ah, M,” my friend said. “Look. He understands everything.”
