MADELINE SHARPLES
The Next Rut

We walked on the wide gravel path, the Grand Tetons on our left, partially hidden by gray and purple clouds. The wind blew a soft coolness onto our bare arms and it began to drizzle, a welcome change from the dry sunny days in the West. Suddenly a huge elk, strutting his antlers, peered down on us. I’ve heard that after mating season elk shed their antlers and rub their stumps on the ground to smooth them off. Then in preparation for the next rut they grow the antlers back one inch a day.
