ALANNA SCHIFFER
Generation

Generation The ambient noise of the bridge is the real transporter. I know we’re on a soundstage in Burbank, but the great black garbage bag, the vacuum of space is pressing in. Off the starboard bow: a thousand tealights from Ikea. The hiss of the pneumatic door and the curve of upholstered living are unconvincing, replicated inner workings junk science, hull the half-formed effort of imagineers. But listen. This sound is ultrasound, this room, a white womb to the ear. This cold hum, the word, a primitive broadcast looping in the blueprint of our hivemind species. We measure the distance in years because we are confused. Time keeps taking our keys, running us down in the floodlit drugstore parking lot, one long laundry list of things left to do before we go the way of our ancestors: boldly, and all the way home.

Dream (Age 6)

The word No made of foam came to get me, walking on its nasal legs, rolling its horrible eye. I saw it coming. Trudging out of childhood, two allied deserters from the dark parade of letters the bannerwaving endless unpronounceable march in the mind. All this time, the words have been impossible to find. I have grown up tired, kept awake at night by a deafening desire to speak; the weighted wheel and sound of stilts approaching as I sleep – I give up. We both know the alphabet is sorely incomplete.
